KEREL's roots lie in the Flemish town of Tielrode, where the beer was brewed by the Verbeeck-Back family from 1908 onwards. A popular regional beer of yesteryear, which unfortunately disappeared underground after the death of brewer Jules Verbeeck.
When the Belgian brewing family De Cock bought the dilapidated brewery in 2015, they had no idea of the wealth that was hidden in the old building. Everyone assumed that KEREL was lost, however, a bottle was still hidden under a pile of rubble in the basement. The contents of the bottle were analysed by the brewing team and a team of Belgian experts to find the yeast DNA. Thanks to extensive research, the same yeast was recently reused in the new VBDCK (Verbeeck-Back-De Cock) brewery, as it is now called.
KEREL is an iconic beer brand. The beers are all idiosyncratic creations.
